Revisiting a text multiple times with a different purpose helps students really dig into a text and results in a deeper level of analysis and thinking. With a close reading, students revisit a short text 3 times: the first is a deep reading to understand the text, the second time they read they look at the craft and structure of the text including the author’s purpose and word choice, and the third is reading beyond the text with connections to other texts and greater implications.
