Why don’t girls play sports?

“Boys stereotype females by saying boys are stronger and more athletic than girls and a girly girl wouldn’t want to get dirty” said student Katelynne Johnson.

Girls fear this stereotype because it can make them look bad.

Many girls take the chance to actually join a sport, but that’s not enough.

Did you know schools have a lack of gender equity in sports? What is gender equity? It is the equality between the sexes (male and female). Gender equity in sports has been a problem for schools nationwide. Westside High School has suffered from the lack of G.E. in sports to the point where the school pays a fine. This is what the coaches have to say about it.
“My entire time {Iv’e worked at WHS}, 6 years, we couldn’t have a JV football team because we couldn’t {match the roster as} the girls” said Coach Dubose, Football coach for WHS. This has been a problem because WHS couldn’t have a JV football team beacuse the girls didn’t want to play a sport. “Girls don’t take the advantages and I don’t think the boys should suffer” said Coach Zayac, girls volleyball coach for WHS.
Weightlifting is a relatively new girl’s sport added to our roster by Coach Dubose of WHS. Coach D. added the girl’s weightlifting team in the year of 2014, with 20 girls on the team coach knew it would maybe match the boys roster. “We’ve been trying to maintain it to make it better” said Coach Dubose. Coaches have tried over time to help the lack of G.E. we have in sports at WHS. Coach Zayac, decided to speak on this as well. “We give the girls the same opportunities as the boys and that’s Gender Equity to me.”

The stereotype should change, this is so sad, the girls can be a great players too! But girls we have to demostrate it! Let’s show our capacity and take advantage of the Gender Equity opportunity!
